Dear Animal Lovers,

This is an urgent request from all of us at CUPA and WRRC.

Recently, the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Govt of India posted the Draft Pet Shop Rules 2010 regulating the sale of birds and animals through pet shops and imposing stringent conditions on pet shops. The rules were on the website and people from all walks of life were invited to send in their comments.

Now what has happened is that lot of pet shop owners have written opposing the rules and there have been hardly any rules from people who support these regulations.

Those of you who would have visited the pet shops behind Russell Market would know what I am talking about. These poor creatures are bought and sold in the most horrendous conditions and these rules are a desperate necessity to better the lives of these animals.

We need more people to write to the Minister supporting the rules and asking them to be implemented straightaway. As to what you have to write…well, it doesn’t have to be anything technical. Please write what you feel like…in the sense what comes to your mind and heart when you think of those hapless animals. You can keep your mail short and specific. And please include your name, designation and address in your mail. And there is no need to mention any affiliation – such as membership of CUPA, WRRC etc. Please write in as a concerned citizen.

And write why these rules are so very necessary and why they need to be implemented without any delay.

And please do not treat this request lightly. If we don’t have enough support for these rules, they may never see the light of the day and our poor animals would continue to suffer in those hell-holes called pet shops.
